The UMAP 2022 Doctoral Consortium (DC) will take place as part of the 30th International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization. The DC provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers and industry practitioners from the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. Students should consider participating in the DC if they are at least fifteen months away from completing their dissertation at the time of the event, but after having settled on a research area or dissertation topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This forum will provide Ph.D. students with an opportunity to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Present and discuss their research ideas to experienced scholars in a supportive, formative, and yet critical environment;<\/li><li>Explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers from the field who will provide constructive feedback and advice;<\/li><li>Explore career pathways available after completing their Ph.D. degree, and finally<\/li><li>Network and build collaborations with other members of the community.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Students are asked to submit a brief proposal outlining their doctoral research (see detailed requirements below), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected for presentation at a DC Session as part of the conference. Each student with an accepted submission will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student\u2019s work and will discuss the doctoral research with the student and the audience at the consortium.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"important-dates\"><strong>Important Dates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Paper Submission: <s>March 31, 2022;<\/s><\/li><li>Notification to authors: April 28, 2022;<\/li><li>Camera-ready submission: May 2, 2022;<\/li><li>Conference: July 4-7, 2022;<\/li><li>DC day: July TBD, 2022;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>The submissions deadlines are at 11:59 pm AoE time (Anywhere on Earth)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"general-guidelines-for-a-doctoral-consortium-paper\"><br><strong>General Guidelines for a Doctoral Consortium Paper<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Candidates must submit their DC proposals \u2013aligning with topics pertaining to the ACM UMAP 2022 key areas\u2013 by the submission deadline. Each proposal should be a single PDF, with four required components: a six-page description of your Ph.D., an expected benefits statement, a recommendation letter, a two-page curriculum vitae plus two extra pages for references. If you are unable to obtain a letter of recommendation from your dissertation advisor, please include a short explanation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Benefits and Contribution statement (1 page):<ul><li>Describe what you hope to gain by participating in the DC and how your participation will benefit other students and faculty.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Letter of Recommendation (from primary dissertation advisor):<ul><li>Describe your interaction with the student and your assessment of the quality of their work. Explain how the UMAP 2022 doctoral consortium would benefit this student at this point in their doctoral program, as well as the contributions you expect the student to make to the group.<\/li><li>The DC targets students who have a clear idea of their research plans and have started their research but have not yet executed a majority of their research plans. Please explain the structure of your student\u2019s program and their expected level of progress by July 2022.<\/li><li>Recall that students who are unable to obtain a letter of recommendation from their dissertation advisor (or the equivalent) should instead include a short explanation and a description of where the student is in their doctoral progress and the anticipated timeline.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Six-page research description (excluding references) plus two extra pages for references: Using a single-column manuscript according to the new workflow for ACM as discussed below and include the following:<ul><li>Your name, Advisor(s) name(s), and the university where you are conducting your doctoral work;<\/li><li>Current year of study and projected completion date (plus information about the regulations of your Ph.D. program regarding length, any part-time study, etc.);<\/li><li>Context and motivation for your research;<\/li><li>Key related work that frames your research;<\/li><li>Specific research objectives, goals, or questions;<\/li><li>Research approach, methods, and rationale;<\/li><li>Results and contributions to date;<\/li><li>Expected next steps;<\/li><li>Dissertation status and long-term goals.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages): a concise summary of your current curriculum vitae, including research publications. (Clearly separate published papers from those under review or in press.)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Please ensure that your submission is complete and conforms to the format and content guidelines above. Because the DC Committee expects to receive a large number of applications, submissions that do not meet these requirements will be desk-rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"submission-guidelines\"><strong>Submission Guidelines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DC proposals should be submitted via the <strong>EasyChair<\/strong> <strong>submission system<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=umap22\"><strong>https:\/\/easychair.org\/conferences\/?conf=umap22<\/strong><\/a> by selecting the \u201cUMAP 2022 Doctoral Consortium\u201d track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposals will be reviewed single-blind and do not need to be anonymized before submission. Submissions should be a single pdf document consisting of an expected benefits statement (1 page), a recommendation letter, the proposal (up to 6 pages long + 2 extra pages for references) in the new ACM single-column style, and a two-page curriculum vitae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proposals must be formatted according to <strong>the new workflow for ACM publications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The templates and instructions are available here: https:\/\/www.acm.org\/publications\/taps\/word-template-workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students should submit their proposals as single-column. Instructions for the preparation of the camera-ready versions of the papers will be provided after acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"acm-umap-proceedings\"><strong>ACM UMAP Proceedings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The accepted ACM UMAP 2022 DC proposals will be included in the Conference Proceedings, which will be published by ACM and will be available via the ACM Digital Library. The doctoral student must register for the conference and participate in the DC for the paper to be included in the proceedings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"financial-support\"><strong>Financial Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ACM UMAP has a history of supporting students who want to attend the conference.
