GRANTS AND SUPPORT
Thanks to the generous support by ACM SIGCHI, ACM SIGWEB, and US NSF, we are able to provide student grants for participants at UMAP 2023. Please refer to the following categories, to learn the eligibility and application process. Note: a student can only get one award from the following categories. We do suggest you to apply the GMTA, no matter you are student authors or not.
Category 1: Gary Marsden Travel Awards (GMTA)
Students are encouraged to apply directly to the SIGCHI Gary Marsden Travel Awards: https://sigchi.org/awards/gary-marsden-travel-awards/, which is established in recognition of Gary Marsden’s contributions and inspiration in HCI4D. The purpose is to support undergraduate and graduate students, early-career researchers (such as those who are ≤ 5 years post-graduation), and those suffering from financial hardship or lacking institutional support, in attending ACM SIGCHI conferences. Deadlines are on the 9th of January, March, and May at 11:59 PM AoE. You can apply even if you did not receive acceptance notifications yet.

- To get reimbursement of the airfare by using US NSF, you must book flights with US flagged carriers (a carrier operating under a code share agreement with a US carrier is considered a US flag carrier, as long as the ticket is issued using the US flag carrier’s airline designator and flight number). Your airline tickets purchases are compliant with the Fly America Act (U.S. carrier or code shared flights are used). Enclosed please find links to the GSA Fly America Act https://www.gsa.gov/policy-regulations/policy/travel-management-policy/fly-america-act and Code Share fact sheet https://www.gsa.gov/travel/plan-book/transportation-airfare-rates-pov-rates-etc/airfare-rates-city-pairs-programs/resource-library/code-share-fact-sheet links
- For eligible flights with US-flagged carriers, we suggest you to book flights directly from USA airlines, e.g., United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaii Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, etc. Even if the flights are operated by a foreign airline (e.g., Air Canada), it is still eligible as long as you book the flights from USA airlines. However, it may not be eligible, if you book a flight from travel agencies (e.g., priceline)
- Tips: If US-flagged flights are very expensive, you may book a US-flagged flight to Athens. From Athens, there are several local airlines to Cyprus, where these flights may be covered by other grants or the funding from your own resources (e.g., your supervisor or University)
