Grants and Support

Thanks to the generous support by ACM SIGWEB, UM Inc. and US NSF, we are able to provide grants for participants at ACM UMAP 2024.

This program is intended to help students and early career researchers attend ACM UMAP 2024. Preference in financial support will be given to Doctoral Consortium presenters and to students who are first authors and will present the paper at the conference. Preference will be also given to underrepresented groups in computer science as well as attendees from economically developing countries. All individuals receiving support may be requested to help with small organization tasks during the conference.

Please refer to the following categories, to learn the eligibility and application process.

Category 1: Discounted Registration Rates

ACM UMAP 2024 will provide discounted rates for attendees registering from the countries designated by ACM as “economically developing” (the categorization is based on World Bank GNI), acknowledging the impact of exchange rates and international inequities. Further information will be available directly on the ACM UMAP 2024 registration page soon.

Category 2: Gary Marsden Travel Awards (GMTA)

Students and early-career researchers should directly apply to the SIGCHI Gary Marsden Travel Awards, which are established in recognition of Gary Marsden’s contributions and inspiration in HCI4D.

The purpose is to support undergraduate and graduate students, early-career researchers (such as those who are ≤ 5 years post-graduation), and those suffering from financial hardship or lacking institutional support, in attending ACM SIGCHI conferences. You can apply even if you did not receive acceptance notifications yet.

Special Notes from US NSF Grants

  • To get reimbursement of the airfare by using US NSF, you must book flights with US flagged carriers (a carrier operating under a code share agreement with a US carrier is considered a US flag carrier, as long as the ticket is issued using the US flag carrier’s airline designator and flight number).
  • Your airline ticket purchases must be compliant with the Fly America Act (U.S. carrier or code shared flights are used). Enclosed please find links to the GSA Fly America Act and Code Share fact sheet.
  • For eligible flights with US-flagged carriers, we suggest you book flights directly from USA airlines, e.g., United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Hawaii Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, etc. Even if the flights are operated by a foreign airline (e.g., Air Canada), it is still eligible as long as you book the flights from USA airlines. However, it may not be eligible, if you book a flight from travel agencies (e.g., priceline).
  • Due to that the US-flagged flights to Cagliari from USA could be very expensive, students can book a US-flagged carrier to other Italy cities, such as Rome or Milan, and then they can purchase a local flight (not necessary to be US-flagged carrier) to arrive at Cagliari from Rome or Milan.
